A Review of Latest Osteen Book, Break Out! | Bob Johnson

from 9Marks.org

joel_osteenIn Break Out!, God is not glorious in majesty; he is your personal genie and your voice inside. The real power belongs to you. When you speak, things happen. When you believe, things come true.

Osteen’s twisting of Scripture to encourage and inspire greatness comes at a great cost, the cost of truth. The truth is, I cannot be my best. If I cannot be my best, and therefore do my part, what hope can I have that God will do his part?

These present sufferings do include abuse, rape, terminal disease, tragedy, accidents, personal bankruptcy, miscarriages, corrupt officials, and being persecuted for the faith. Joel has no message of hope or comfort for people in these. His principles and exhortations create more laws and commands that are rooted in our determination, but have nothing to do with the gospel of grace. In the end, we are left to save ourselves from our unfulfilled dreams.

For the faithful pastor who does not have an audience the size of a stadium, or the believer who never makes it to CEO, Osteen’s message of “hope” is actually one of condemnation. Either you do not dream enough or something is wrong with your faith.

While his message is popular because you are your own savior, it simply is not true. Pastor, some of your people may like what he has to say and may feel that he is a nice guy with a positive message in a negative world. The problem is, when we accept his horrible theology, our entire understanding of Scripture is warped.

Joel probably is America’s pastor. Sadly, Break Out! pastors people to be narcissistic, biblically illiterate, and theologically confused. In other words, Break Out! tells you to suspend biblical discernment and enjoy your day at Disneyworld.

So just keep putting in your tokens. Keep believing and declaring that you have already won. The machine just hasn’t realized it yet.

John MacArthur Rebukes Joel Osteen

Video | Joel Osteen is a False Teacher I Washer, Piper & MacArthur

Paul Washer, John Piper and John MacArthur expose and rebuke Joel Osteen as the false prophet he is.

Marsha West | Rick Warren and Joel Osteen Acquiesce to Oprah

By Erin Benzinger, Christian Research Network

Last week, two of America’s most well-known pastors sat down with the queen of television and one of the most influential propagators of New Age thought, Oprah Winfrey. Rick Warren and Joel Osteen each filmed separate episodes for upcoming episodes of Winfrey’s Lifeclass. In her latest article, Marsha West asks some crucial questions. She writes:

So, what is going on in the visible Church?

Glad you asked. In a word: syncretism. Syncretism occurs when elements of other religious beliefs are mashed into mainstream Protestant denominations.

MacArthur-Osteen a “Pagan Religionist”

This comes from TruthSouce.net via YouTube:

Pastor John MacArthur exposes Joel Osteen as a pagan religionist, a quasi-pantheist, and an agent of Satan. He critiques Joel’s book, quotes, and prayer and compares them with what the Bible teaches.

This is an excerpt from John MacArthur’s sermon, “A True Knowledge of the True God.” Used by permission. You can read the transcript, watch, or download the full video at http://www.gty.org/Resources/Sermons/90-397

Just my 2 cents…

Why are some people who claim to be so committed to a belief, religion, political position etc., so offended when their position is challenged, and they refuse to defend their position? Is it because they fear confrontation or that either they are ignorant of what they say they are commited to or lack confidence in their position altogether?

Obama notes:

Not knowing their microphones were still on, the idiot is chief and the French dwarf president are caught bad-mouthing Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu. What a bunch of phonies and pansies. Netanyahu is more a leader, and a man, that those two misfits ever thought of being.

Nothing is safe anymore, as the Obama Agriculture department has announced they are placing a tax on Christmas trees. What’s next….I started to say what’s next but it probably already taxed whatever it is. http://blog.heritage.org/2011/11/08/obama-couldnt-wait-his-new-christmas-tree-tax/

Mississippi voters defeat of Proposition 26 which sought to declare that life begins at conception, is more proof of the retardation of this backwards state. I live here and work here, but not totally by my choice. As soon as I can, Im gone, never to return. http://www.wlbt.com/story/15993188/mississippi-voters-reject-personhood-amendment

Penn State is wrapped up in a horrible scandal involving one of its former football coaches is accused of sexually molesting young boys during a camp he put together. Jerry Sandusky faces 40 charges. This is of course the most awful part of the story. But what also is disturbing is the cowardly lack of response by the Penn State athletic department, football coach Joe Paterno, the former player who was an eye-witness to one incident and didn’t report it to police, and the ignorant behavior of students on that campus cheering Paterno. You people are sick and need to get a life, or for some, a life sentence. But hey…it’s football, and we can’t interrupt the sport. Losers!

Speaking of losers…Joel Osteen is back in the news yet again, this time suckin up and puckerin up to pagan deceiver Oprah Winfrey. Christian Research Net posts a story from ChristianPost.com including a video of Rev. Smiley’s remarks….

Television mogul Oprah Winfrey and stage and movie producer Tyler Perry created a stir with a surprise appearance at Pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, Sunday for an 11 a.m. service.

“Awesome to have you!” said Osteen, announcing their presence and welcoming the celebrities to the church. “We’re so honored to have you both here, and we just celebrate and pray for you guys with what God is doing in your lives.”

Apprising Ministries also notes:

Though Winfrey professes to be a Christian, as I showed you in Oprah Winfrey Speaking As A Christian, her testimony and teaching simply doesn’t bear that out. We need to be praying for her salvation because she has no relationship with God; she is currently an outspoken enemy of the Cross of Christ (cf. Philippians 3:18).

I say again Osteen is a heretic, a false prophet and a joke.

Dragged Kicking and Screaming into the Modern Age? Lessons from Piers Morgan’s Interview with Joel Osteen

Dr. Albert Mohler offers valuable insight into the latest Joel Osteen TV appearance promoting his garbage book Every Day A Friday, How To Be Happier 7 Days a Week.

“The larger problem is that many evangelical Christians would follow Joel Osteen’s logic without a second thought or without even what the psychologists would describe “cognitive dissonance.” They say they believe that homosexuality is a sin, and that same-sex marriage is contrary to God’s will. But they allow personal relationships and social pressure to override their (evidently) lightly-held convictions.”

Albert Mohler -”The Osteen Moment – Your Own Moment Will Come Soon Enough”

Joel Osteen didn’t get where he is today by staking out controversial positions on biblical and moral issues. Now, however, Osteen finds himself in the midst of controversy. Last night, Joel and Victoria Osteen appeared together on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight and, boxed in by Morgan, Joel Osteen reluctantly confessed that he believes homosexuality to be a sin.

Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. observes that Joel Osteen found himself forced to answer a question that every Christian — and certainly every Christian leader — will be forced to answer. In his article, “The Osteen Moment – Your Own Moment Will Come Soon Enough,” Dr. Mohler writes, “When that moment comes, and come it will, those who express confidence in the Bible’s teaching that homosexuality is a sin will find themselves facing the same shock and censure from the very same quarters.”

Read the details in Dr. Mohler’s blog, which is often updated several times a day.

Brannon Howse-Joel Osteen’s New Age Life Now?

from Worldview Weekend:

"Whatever you conceive you can achieve."

With this favorite karma-changing promise, New Agers believe you need only use the "unlimited" power and consciousness of your mind to bring about all your dreams, desires and wishes.

Cloaked in a "Christian" package, Joel Osteen’s Your Best Life Now, bears an uncomfortable and dangerous similarity to this most popular of New Age claims. Sample a few of the Osteen versions:

• "You will produce what you’re continually seeing in your mind. If you foster an image of defeat and failure, then you’re going to live that kind of life. But if you develop an image of victory, success, health, abundance, joy, peace, and happiness, nothing on earth will be able to hold those things from you." (page 5)

• "You must conceive it in your heart and mind before you can receive it." (page 6)

• "You must look through your ‘eyes of faith’ and start seeing yourself as happy, healthy and whole." (page 15)

• "What you will receive is directly connected to how you believe." (page 22)

• "We receive what we believe." (page 72)

• "Learn how to conceive. Keep the image of what you want to become in front of you. You’re going to become what you believe." (page 81)

Osteen now travels the country, packing out stadiums with  his happy-talk. But I’d like to see Osteen pay a visit to China, preach his "your best life now" drivel, and see how Christians there respond. Let Osteen look into the eyes of Pastor Lei who has been repeatedly arrested and beaten for preaching the Word of God in his church-a church notlicensed by the Chinese government. How would the American’s best life work out for Pastor Lei and his congregation? Perhaps their jail time for the Gospel would give them time to assess Rev. Osteen’s claims.

Have these and countless other persecuted Christians been beaten, jailed and murdered because they "received what they believed," or did these terrible things happen to them because they did not "develop an image of victory, success, health, abundance, joy, peace, and happiness"?

Were eleven of Jesus’ disciples martyred because, "they received what they believed"? Were the disciples living under a "curse of poverty and defeat" as Osteen says of so many?
