Cowboy Ethics | James P. Owen

Code of the West
(from “Cowboy Ethics: What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West” by James P. Owen)

  • Live each day with courage.
  • Take pride in your work.
  • Always finish what you start.
  • Do what has to be done.
  • Be tough, but fair.
  • When you make a promise, keep it.
  • Ride for the brand.
  • Talk less and say more.
  • Remember that some things aren’t for sale.
  • Know where to draw the line.

Chuckwagon Etiquette

  • No one eats until Cookie calls
  • When Cookie calls, everyone comes a runnin’
  • Hungry cowboys wait for no man. They fill their plates, fill their bellies, and then move on so stragglers can fill their plates
  • Cowboys eat first, talk later.
  • It’s okay to eat with your fingers. The food is clean
  • If you’re refilling the coffee cup and someone yells “Man at the pot.” You’re obliged to serve refills.
  • Don’t take the last serving unless your sure you’re the last man.
  • Food left on the plate is an insult to the cook.
  • No running or saddling a horse near the wagon. And when you ride off, always ride down wind from the wagon.
  • If you come across any decent firewood, bring it back to the wagon
  • Strangers are always welcome at the wagon.

Congratulations to Kent Rollins for a Job Well Done!

Congratulations to Kent Rollins, owner and cook of Red River Ranch Chuck Wagon for a great showing during the finals of the Food Network Chopped Grill Masters competition. Kent made it throught he preliminaries and down the the final two cooks when he lost to Ernest Servantes of Texas.

Donna and I literally were cheering at our house during the program and were sad to see Kent lose, but we are so proud of him and the way he conducted himself. His honesty and integrity clearly show through. He is a good man, a talented cook and sets a great example. At one point he said he was there to represent his kind of people, meaning everyday workin folks and especially those of us who love the cowboy way of life. I have cowboyed a little in my younger days and have cooked a lot and i felt Kent was there for me and others and it was great.

As I mentioned Kent and his wife Shannon operate Red River Ranch Chuck Wagon and you need to visit their website at http://kentrollins.com/

My wife Donna and I had the priviledge of meeting Kent and Shannon last year. I had know of Kent already having seen him on the Food Network battling against chef Bobby Flay in one of Flay’s famous Throw Downs, where he defeated Flay in a Chicken Fried steak competition. You can see that program and a lot more on Kent’s website.

If you missed the Chopped episode, check your local listings as Im sure Food Network will rerun it again.
