A Healthy Church Member

What is a Healthy Church Member?, is a new book by Thabiti Anyabwile, and on todays program, Mike shares Pastor Anaybwile’s 10 marks of a healthy church member. For Christians, playing an active part in the local church is not optional. God intends for every believer to contribute to the mission of the local church and experience profound spiritual growth as a result. Also, Mike shares results of a recent survey concerning Christian radio and who listens.

Tolerated Nonattendance

“A member’s regular, tolerated nonattendance begins to raise further questions.  What kind of leadership must a church have to allow such a misrepresentation to arise and flourish?  What expectations are being communicated to those who are joining?  What discipline is practiced, if any?  In fact, tolerated noninvolvement among members may even call into question the kind of evangelism being done and the church’s understanding of conversion, even of the gospel itself.  Allowing such nonattending members to retain their membership would seem to be such blatant disobedience to Scripture, and such a brazen disregard of the scriptural health of those concerned, that it would even call into question the teaching that brought about such an unhealthy tolerance in the body.”

Erwin McManus on the decline of church membership

“My primary assessment would be because American Christians tend to be incredibly self-indulgent. So they see the church as a place that is there for them to meet their needs and to express faith in a way that is meaningful for them. There is almost no genuine compassion or urgency about serving and reaching people who don’t know Christ.

I think the bottom line is our own spiritual narcissism. There are methods and you can talk about style, structure and music, but in the end it really comes down to your heart and what you care about.”

Paige Patterson on “The greatest theological error in Southern Baptist churches today”

In this article from Strange Baptist, Dr. Paige Patterson, President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, names the greatest challenge facing the Southern Baptist Convention today, lack of emphasis on the importance of regenerate church membership. I applaud Dr. Paige for his courage and faithfulness for stating the truth. Here is a portion of that article:

 “Somewhere along the line, the concept of believers’ baptism has been lost,” he said. “I do believe that Baptists have become the worst of the infant baptizers today. You look at how many people we are baptizing under age 5 today and you see that we don’t understand that until someone has had a regenerating experience with the Holy Spirit changing his life he is not an appropriate candidate for baptism.”

Walking the aisle, signing the card…….

I asked Dr. Albert Mohler once, “What is your opinion, thought, on the invitation/altar call?” His response sticks in my mind to this day and I have quoted him on many ocassions. Dr. Mohler said, “I think the invitation/altar call is both necessary and dangerous.”

His words came to mind again recently as I read these two wonderful posts at;

Every Number has a Story…The SBC and ‘Integrity’

This video comes to us from Tony Kummer at via It deals with the efforts led by Dr. Tom Ascol to introduce a resolution at the recent annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention addressing the integrity of church membership. This video is very telling and speaks greatly to why I would say the SBC is on the downgrade.

Ascol on Church Membership

Dr. Thomas Ascol, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Cape Coral, Florida and Executive Director of Founders Ministries, commented on is blog regarding church membership. Dr. Ascol, who has been a guest on our radio program on several occasions, gets in right in my opinion, when he says…

However it is done, every church owes it to the candidate for membership as well as to the congregation to look for a credible profession of faith before accepting new members into the fellowship. The process for doing this need not be complicated or too extensive, but it should be thoughtful and intentional.

**Program Alert** Jeff Noblit on MCP

noblit.jpgOn the Thursday May 10 edition of The Mike Corley Program, I will be sharing an edited version of a message entitlted “Church History and The Miracle of Conversion“, delivered by Pastor Jeff Noblit of First Baptist Church, Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It was the message from day 2 of the True Church Conference on May 4, 2007. I think it is one of the most important messages I have personally heard in quite some time and should be heard by every Christian and especially every Southern Baptist. Pastor Noblit’s entire message as well as the entire audio or video set of the conference is available at
